Just back from 8 days at the Plaza. Everything was perfect from check in to check out and all points in between. We’ve stayed at the Plaza many times over the last 10 years or so and I am happy to say that, other than their remodel/renovations from about 3 years ago, nothing has changed. That is a good thing because we’ve always found the Plaza to best one of, if not the best overall value in Las Vegas.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and have the necessary amenities. As noted above the hotel was fully renovated about 3 years ago and the rooms are quite nice. The beds have very thick comfortable mattresses. Decent size flat screen TV, lots of storage space (rooms are fairly large) and good working a/c and plumbing/showers. There are safes in each room as well. No coffee maker, but who needs one in Vegas, especially here, you can get free coffee from the casino (hello Bailey’s) and there is inexpensive coffee at McDonald’s on the property (also a more upscale coffee joint on property if you prefer). Also fridges are not included with the standard room rate, but you can get one if needed, for a small fee. You can also buy a Styrofoam cooler at a number of places on Fremont for like $2-3 and that should suffice for most.

There is an outdoor, rooftop, pool open each day from 8AM to 8PM (I wish it was open later, till at least midnight, but it seems LV pools typically close early). There is bar service at the pool. The pool is pretty basic but a good size and plenty good enough to lounge around and cool off. There are plenty of loungers and free towels, you never have trouble finding a spot or a towel.

The maid service is outstanding. Our room was fully and properly cleaned and restocked each day in a timely manner. A couple times we ran out of some supplies (i.e. towels, tissue) and called housekeeping and both times they delivered the supplies within 10 minutes. Also the people in the room prior to us had left the safe locked so we called maintenance and they were up in our room and had in fixed in under 15 minutes. To me the service is simply exceptional. We’ve stayed in many hotels over the years in Vegas and elsewhere, including several “5 star” properties and places where the room rates were much higher, and I can’t think of another hotel that responds to our needs so quickly and efficiently than the Plaza.

The casino itself is bright and clean after the recent renovation and offers the typical gaming options you would expect. The Plaza is 1 of 3 remaining casinos downtown that offer live poker. They use an electronic dealer system . There are few cash games as they seem specialize in small buy in tournaments (there are several each day). The tourneys are good fun and the competition is mostly other tourists with a few locals. They also have a nice sports book, I’d say best in downtown LV. There are two bars servicing the casino. The Omaha Bar is the main bar and is open 24/7 and the sports book bar is open daily from 4PM to midnight.

We find the bar and cocktail service at the Plaza outstanding. The staff are all very friendly and the service is quick and efficient. When you are gambling at the Plaza I’d say you get a drink as fast as any casino in Vegas and faster than most. Once in awhile you may have to wait a few minutes for a drink but once they find where you’re sitting they will be back with regularity. They are friendly and polite and if you are as well that certainly will not hurt. And please don’t forget to tip your bartenders and/or cocktail servers, these people do their best and work very hard to keep you happy and rely on tips to make a decent living.

Make sure you use a club card when gambling to collect points, which may entitle you to some freebies/comps. The players club and casino services staff are also very friendly and helpful.

Another thing we really like about the Plaza is they have live music beside the Omaha bar each night. Some nights they have duelling pianos, others they have a 70s retro band, and on Sundays a jazz/blues band. The musicians are all very good and entertaining. This is one of the few casinos downtown that offers free nightly live music. It’s a great idea. You can either listen to them while your gambling or take some time off gambling and sit in the lounge area and watch them and even do some dancing. It’s nice to have these options.

As far a dining options the Plaza has plenty to offer from fast food (food court McDonalds, Subway etc.) to fine dining (Oscar’s Steakhouse). There is also a Hash House A Go-Go restaurant that offers tasty food in large portions, for reasonable prices. They have a wide variety of food for breakfast, lunch , and dinner. There is also a good pizza joint (Pop Up Pizza) where you can buy whole pizzas or by the slice. The slices are large, 1 or 2 is enough for most, and the pizza is very good.

The atmosphere in the Plaza is easy going and laid back. They cater mostly to a middle class clientele. Most people we encounter there (i.e. other tourists) are friendly and are in Vegas to have a good time. Generally you’ll see all ages at the Plaza with most between probably about 30-55. The staff fits well with the clientele they are there working hard to try to ensure you have a fun time while at the Plaza.

Without a doubt the best part of the Plaza, and what keeps us coming back, are the staff. In the many times we’ve stayed at the Plaza only once have we ever encountered a staff member who was not very friendly (and that person is long gone a number of years ago). Otherwise the staff at the Plaza are simply outstanding. I don’t know if they recruit only friendly, caring, people with outstanding customer service skills and/or train them that way, but whatever the case, it is working. In my mind the staff will do whatever they can to cater to you and make sure you have a great time.

In summary, the Plaza offers an exceptional value and overall fantastic Las Vegas experience for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend the Plaza to anyone visiting Las Vegas.
