I have always loved the Mirage. It may be the original and older than the rest, it still hasn’t lost what it’s always had. The ambiance when you first walk in is still paradise, from the rain forest to the orchids. I wish they could sell their scent, it’s fantastic. Something has happened to the staff since the last time we were there. They were all WONDERFUL. Not a sour or mean one in the bunch. Our housekeeper was one of the best. We tipped her well but she went above and beyond. She deserves a special mention. It was the little things too, she saw we had almost ran out of toothpaste, and left us complimentary toothpaste without being asked. That was only one of several little things she had done. What an ambassador to Mirage she was. The resort is still beautiful. Pool, grounds, trees, volcano, all takes you to a different world. The buffet is still one of the better ones in Vegas, and we are somewhat picky eaters, opting for higher end options. Carnegie Deli is very good and the staff there are terrific. Also, try the Pantry, it’s a different type of dinner with well prepared food items. I had the pork sliders, I’d go back there just for those. My wife had the chicken Caesar salad which she felt was one of the best she’s had. They have good coffee too.
On the down side, I have been coming to Vegas since the late 70’s and I miss having coffee urns scattered throughout the casinos in the morning. I cannot stand spending my first 40 minutes of every day having to wait in line at Starbucks in the casino. This isn’t unique to the Mirage, but it’s a very unpleasant part of a casino resort stay. And, just one word on the resort fees…GET RID OF THEM. Good God, you charge above and beyond the price for everything else. $60 for two drinks at the pool should be the resort fee. $50 for two us at the burger joint for lunch, should be the resort fee. $70 for two buffet admissions, should be the resort fee…If you really need the extra $30 from your guests, just stick it in the room fee. We’re not idiots, quit treating us like we are. We don’t need a newspaper. Other hotels outside of Vegas give us free WIFI, same is true for the workout room, and for heaven’s sake, we all have cell phones, we don’t need your room phone to make local calls!!! It’s a slimy way to get us for an extra $30, we’re wise to it, just charge us the money up front. Treat us with the respect we deserve.
I get comped rooms through MLife and can stay in any MGM property, including the Bellagio and Aria. We pick the Mirage. Except for the Resort fee and the horrible blackjack rules, we are never disappointed.
