If you are looking for a decent hotel in the downtown area of Las Vegas, you can do a lot worse than staying at the Cabana Suites in the El Cortez. At the time of booking, the suites were only a couple of dollars more per night than a standard room, and this is money well spent.
The hotel is located at Fremont and 6th Street, far enough away from the Fremont Street experience that you don’t get the noise and crowds that plague hotels in the main “experience” area. Check in was a breeze and then it’s a short walk across the street to the Cabana Suites which are located in a 6 storey extension with it’s own security staff at the door and concierge at the front desk.
A gym is available on the ground floor and the corridors to the rooms are plushly decorated. My room was on the 5th floor and except for the occasional emergency vehicle there was no discernible noise. A safe, flat screen TV, radio with Ipod dock, coffee maker and ironing equipment are all in the room. In the strict sense of the word it is not truly a suite but it is far more comfortable than the typical rooms in the mid-strip hotels. The room is large with a comfortable bed and easy chair. The bathroom consisting of shower cubicle, washbasin and toilet is huge. In particular, you don’t bang your arms all the time on the shower sides.
The room is adequately lit and well stocked with towels, free water bottles and a selection of snacks that can be purchased. There are no drawers as such to put clothes in, just open shelving built into various units. An open rail is available for hanging trousers and shirts. The only slight annoyance was that the wifi seems to disconnect after each 24 hour period and does not readily prompt you to log back in.
Dining options at the El Cortez are limited but there are plenty of options on Fremont Street. The casino is well stocked with table games including 50c roulette and slot machines.
I would highly recommend the Cabana Suites if looking for downtown accommodation.
