Downtown is becoming a great alternative to the strip and the Grand is a great place to stay there. Its slighty off Fremont street, but only a block walk. Its also just a block away from both the WAX bus (which stops at Tropicana/Excalibur on the strip and the airport) and the Duece/CDX to the strip. The WAX was a great option since it takes the highway, but the others took way too long to get to the strip. If you need to get back after the WAX runs take a cab, will cost about $25 from mid strip to the Grand.
The casino in the hotel is solid, though not as busy as the ones on Fremont street, while the pool deck has nice lounging areas, if only a small pool. Free wifi and water everyday is always a plus.
While downtown don’t miss Banger brewing, the downtown container park and some of the other great food and drink options around there like “eat” and Commonwealth. If you like Vegas but don’t want to stay on the strip, hard to go wrong here
